Author Suze Yalof Schwartz got her first taste of meditation from a surprising source: her mother-in-law! After trying her suggestion of a three-minute breathing and guided visualization technique, Suze instantly noticed a difference in herself.
She was hooked and began her search for places where a busy, working mother could meditate and learn more about the practice.
Unfortunately, her search came up empty. The thing she was looking for didn’t exist, “Where is the Drybar of meditation? Where you can walk in feeling icky and walk out feeling great?”
When Suze couldn’t find what she wanted, she decided to create it.
Drawing on her own experience as a makeover guru for The Today Show, CBS This Morning and other big name shows, Suze set out to give meditation its own makeover. She created a space where busy people could drop in and meditate when it was convenient for them. And so, Unplug Meditation Studio was born in 2014 in Los Angeles.
To create her perfect meditation space, Suze did countless hours of reading and experiential research. After opening her meditation studios, Suze used what she’d learned to write a guide to meditation to make it easy for anyone, anywhere to reap the benefits. It’s called Unplug: A Simple Guide to Meditation for Busy Skeptics and Modern Soul Seekers.
The book is a handy guide to everything you ever wanted to know about meditation. It explains the basics and dispels many of the myths that abound about the practice. For example, the idea that you must be able to sit still for long periods of time or clear your brain of all thoughts for it to work.
In the chapter titled, ‘Strange and Wonderful Things That May Happen’, Suze highlights the many benefits of meditation, including the fact that it changes the brain. “It physically alters the shape of your gray matter to make you smarter, happier, and calmer. This isn’t just hype; it’s been scientifically proven,” she writes. For more on this, watch a fascinating TEDx talk by Sara Lazar, neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School.
Unplug expounds on more of meditation’s benefits, including its ability to help you:
- slow down
- release stress
- decrease anxiety
- relieve pain
- increase focus, clarity & productivity
- tame anger
- sleep better
- be kinder
- feel happier
- feel calm, present & relaxed
The book also provides techniques and tips to help even the busiest and most skeptical people integrate meditation into their lives. Suze certainly did that for Exhale Studio Founder Laura Marasco.
Laura completed her meditation teacher training at Unplug in Los Angeles, CA. She was so inspired by the experience and the life changing benefits she’s received from meditating, that she decided to open Exhale Studio in Shelton, CT.
Like Suze, Laura’s goal is to make it easy for anyone to meditate. To this end, Exhale offers a wide range of meditation and yoga classes so that everyone can find a day and time that works for them.
